The safest answer is no: turn off a portable space heater before going to sleep. A heater can ignite nearby bedding or other materials, and a safety shutoff cannot eliminate every fire or electrical hazard. Use it to warm the room while you’re awake, then switch it off before bed.

Can You Run a Space Heater Overnight?
The safest choice is to turn off a portable space heater before you go to sleep. Safety features can reduce some risks, but they do not make unattended overnight operation risk-free.
Why overnight use is risky
A portable heater may run for hours while you are asleep and unable to notice a problem. It could tip, overheat, or be covered or crowded by bedding, clothing, or other items. A thermostat, timer, tip-over switch, or overheat shutoff may reduce particular risks, but none guarantees that a heater is safe to leave running unattended.
Oil-filled radiators and ceramic heaters are both electric space heaters; the type alone does not make overnight operation risk-free. Follow the heater’s manual and any warnings on its label.

A safer way to warm the room before bed
Run the heater while you are awake and in the room, then turn it off before you get into bed. If the room becomes too cold after that, use your home’s built-in heating system if available, or adjust bedding and sleepwear rather than leaving a portable heater running unattended.
If you use a portable electric heater while awake:
- Place it on a level, stable surface where it cannot be knocked over.
- Keep it at least 3 feet from bedding, curtains, furniture, clothing, and other combustible materials, or farther away if the manual requires it.
- Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
- Keep it away from water and never cover it.
- Make sure smoke alarms are installed and working.
A timer is useful only if it is approved for the heater and set to switch it off before you go to sleep. Do not use a timer or smart plug to leave a heater running while you are asleep unless the heater’s instructions explicitly say that setup is permitted; even then, turning it off before bed is the safer choice.
Check the heater and outlet
Before using a heater, inspect its cord, plug, and housing. Don’t use it if the cord is frayed, the plug is damaged, or the heater has been dropped or is acting unusually. Stop using it if the plug or outlet becomes hot, you notice a burning smell, or you see sparks. Unplug it if safe to do so, and have a damaged outlet checked by a qualified electrician.
If you need overnight heat regularly, consider addressing the room’s heating problem with a properly installed heating system or qualified professional rather than relying on a portable heater while you sleep.
FAQ
Can I leave a space heater on while I sleep if it has an automatic shutoff?
The safer recommendation is to turn it off before sleeping. An automatic shutoff can reduce some risks, but it cannot prevent every fire or electrical problem.
Is an oil-filled radiator safe to run overnight?
It is still a portable electric heater, so the same conservative advice applies: turn it off before you go to sleep and follow its manual.
Can I use an extension cord with a space heater overnight?
Do not use an extension cord or power strip unless the heater’s manufacturer explicitly allows it. When in use, plug the heater directly into a wall outlet and switch it off before sleeping.
