A space heater that repeatedly trips an AFCI breaker may have an internal fault, a damaged cord or plug, a circuit overload, or a problem with the receptacle. Unplug it and do not keep resetting the breaker to continue using it. After a few basic checks, replacing the heater is usually the sensible choice if the breaker trips again—especially if it trips on more than one suitable circuit.

What an AFCI trip means

An AFCI, or arc-fault circuit interrupter, is designed to shut off power when it detects electrical arcing or other abnormal current patterns. That is different from a standard overload trip, which usually occurs when the circuit is drawing more current than its rating allows.

A 120-volt heater typically draws approximately:

  • 750 watts: 6.25 amps
  • 1,000 watts: 8.3 amps
  • 1,500 watts: 12.5 amps

Those figures do not include other devices on the same circuit. A 1,500-watt heater can use most of a 15-amp circuit by itself, so lamps, computers, refrigerators, or other appliances may cause an ordinary overload. However, a trip that happens immediately, repeatedly, or with no obvious competing load can point to an electrical fault rather than simple high wattage.

Check these causes in order

1. Unplug the heater and inspect the plug and cord

With the heater disconnected, look for:

  • Cuts, crushed sections, melted insulation, or discoloration
  • A loose or bent plug blade
  • Heat damage around the plug or receptacle
  • A cord that feels unusually stiff or damaged
  • Burn marks, buzzing, crackling, or a burning smell

Do not use a heater with any of these symptoms. Do not repair a damaged heater cord with tape, and do not replace a molded plug unless the manufacturer specifically provides an approved repair procedure.

2. Remove extension cords and power strips

Portable heaters should generally be plugged directly into a properly grounded wall receptacle. Extension cords, surge protectors, and power strips can overheat or add connection points that create problems. They do not fix an AFCI trip.

If the heater was connected through one of these devices, disconnect it and inspect the wall receptacle and heater plug before deciding whether to try the heater again. Follow the heater manufacturer’s instructions if they are more restrictive.

3. Consider other loads on the circuit

Turn off or unplug other high-wattage equipment on the same circuit, such as another heater, a microwave, a toaster, or a hair dryer. Reset the breaker only after the heater and other loads are unplugged.

If the breaker stays on with the heater disconnected but trips when the heater is connected, the heater or its connection is suspect. If it trips when several appliances run together, the problem may be circuit capacity rather than the heater alone.

Do not solve an overload by repeatedly resetting the breaker or by using a different receptacle with an extension cord.

4. Check the receptacle and setup

A loose receptacle can create heat or arcing. Stop using it if the outlet is loose in the wall, warm, discolored, cracked, buzzing, or produces a loose connection with the plug.

Also make sure the heater is upright, unobstructed, and positioned exactly as the manual specifies. Setup problems usually trigger the heater’s own safety shutoff rather than an AFCI, but blocked airflow can cause overheating and should still be corrected.

5. Try a different suitable circuit only as a diagnosis

If the cord and plug look normal, a qualified adult may use a different properly wired wall receptacle on a separate circuit for a brief diagnostic check. Do not use an extension cord, power strip, or adapter, and do not treat another room as a permanent solution.

  • Trips multiple AFCI circuits: Stop using the heater. An internal fault is likely, and replacement is usually more practical than repair.
  • Trips only one circuit: The original circuit, receptacle, wiring, or circuit load may need inspection by a qualified electrician.
  • Does not trip but the plug or outlet gets hot: Stop using it immediately and have the receptacle checked.

Never bypass, replace, or disable an AFCI breaker to keep a heater running. Electrical panel work should be performed by a qualified professional.

Choosing a replacement heater

A new heater is not guaranteed to work on every AFCI circuit. AFCI compatibility is not a simple product feature that eliminates electrical faults. The replacement should have a sound cord and plug, appropriate safety certifications recognized in the United States, and the protective features required by its instructions.

Choose lower wattage when the room allows it

A 750-watt setting places about half the electrical demand of a 1,500-watt setting. A heater with selectable wattage gives you more flexibility on circuits that also power other equipment. Lower wattage does not make a defective heater safe, and it may not provide enough heat for a large or poorly insulated room.

Consider an oil-filled radiator for steady heat

An oil-filled radiator can be a practical replacement when you want quiet, gradual heat and do not need a strong fan. It still requires a direct wall connection and can still trip a breaker if it has a fault or shares too much circuit load.

Consider a ceramic heater for faster spot heating

A ceramic heater may warm a small occupied area quickly and often offers multiple heat settings. Look for a lower-power setting, tip-over shutoff, overheat protection, and controls that match how you use the room. More controls or electronics do not guarantee AFCI performance, so the unit still needs to be returned or disconnected if it trips the breaker.

Match safety features to the location

Regardless of heater style, look for:

  • Tip-over protection
  • Overheat protection
  • A thermostat or automatic temperature control
  • A stable base
  • A clearly labeled wattage and voltage
  • A cord and plug approved for the appliance

Keep the heater on a hard, level surface with the clearances specified by the manufacturer. Keep bedding, curtains, clothing, paper, and furniture away from it, and do not leave a portable heater operating unattended or while sleeping unless the manufacturer’s instructions and local safety guidance specifically permit that use.

When to replace the heater or call an electrician

Replace the heater when it trips AFCI breakers repeatedly, shows cord or plug damage, smells hot or burned, makes unusual electrical noises, or has suffered liquid exposure or impact. A portable heater is generally not a good candidate for consumer-level internal repair.

Call a qualified electrician when the breaker trips with multiple appliances disconnected, the receptacle shows heat or damage, the AFCI will not reset, or a different heater causes the same problem on that circuit. If the breaker or wiring is repeatedly tripping, the cause should be diagnosed rather than defeated.
